Back to School is not just for kids

Despite the fact that all my children have graduated from college and are in the workforce, it seems like yesterday that I was getting them ready for Back to School.  We would go to the store to pick up supplies and clothes. Once September rolled around, I was excited about the promise of a new school year for my children. The new school year held opportunities for them to have new experiences, learn new subjects and make new friends.

While it has been quite some time since most of us have been in school, there are aspects of Back to School that apply to professionals:

Embrace Learning

Most students had a favorite subject, even if they didn’t like going to school but. For me it was Social Studies and Spanish. What was it for you?  Whatever it was, remember how much you enjoyed learning about your favorite subject. Take that enthusiasm and channel it either to learning something new or reacquainting yourself with an interest from your past.  Active learning, even if it isn’t a business subject, keeps your mind engaged. When your mind is engaged, you are better able to meet the challenges of doing business.

Join Clubs

My kids were involved with a myriad of sports and activities. While academics are important, being involved outside of the classroom allows kids to learn teamwork and problem-solving skills. It also got them away from the television, computer and phone screens and interacting with both people their own age and adults outside of a classroom setting. What’s good for kids is also good for adults.  Join a professional organization to learn more about your industry, take part in events and network with other like-minded business professionals.  After so much remote work in the past two years, it will be refreshing to put yourself out there!

RECESS!

For many students, this was the best part of the school day. You were outside, away from the classroom and you had a chance to play games with your friends and classmates.  It is equally important for adults to have a “recess” and take short breaks during the workday. Try going for a walk, reading a book or newspaper, or listening to a podcast.  Taking a break during the workday will give your mind a rest and a reset to help you prepare for the rest of the day. It might even help you clear your mind enough to come up with new ideas or solutions to work challenges..

Back to school isn’t just for students.  Adults can benefit too.  Now if you will excuse me, I am going to use my recess time to play with my cats!
